The tradition of making salt in the from of a crystal plate existed in Manipur since 17th Century. Before that, this commodity was fulfilled from Myanmar and Tibeten traders. Ningel is a surviving village in Manipur where traditional method of preparing salt from brine is still in practice. Apart from Ethopia in Africa, Manipur also prepare salt uniquely in the shape of plates in five different sizes. In order to fulfil the cultural needs like marriage, post-pregnancy, worship of deities and many other rituals of Manipuri social life, plate like salt is not only used as commodity for use in culinary practices but as an item of offerings and cultural identity.
